Last Friday we had both of the girls IEP meetings. The wonderful part is that both of the girls were deemed eligible for the special needs preschool program. The other awesome thing is that this program is run in the school that the girls will be in through 5th grade.
The neat thing is that our case manager (who is a school psychologist because of Abby's rare diagnosis) took a huge special interest in Abby. She told us that she likes to gather information on the rare diagoses of the children in the school. She laughed as she told us how the rarest diagnosis she had in the past few years was 1 in 500,000 and now we have RS which is so incredibly rare. The cool thing for me is that rather than looking at her with that patronizing way many people do (like, aww, look at the little miracle child who shouldn't be walking) Jackie looks at Abby like she is about the neatest little person she ever met. I LOVE THAT! She sees her as special not because she has RS but because she has done so much in spite of it. She is the perfect person for the job as far as I see it.
So, she (actually both of the girls) will go to school 5 days a week for two and a half hours a day. They will have every other Friday off. Abby will get twice weekly PT and OT privately. I think it is going to be huge for her. Being around her peers. Having new challenges. I have a feeling my baby is going to blossom in a big way.
